GLBT Pride

DAMMIT I just spent forty-five minutes on a good rant and had my computer crash just as I was posting it...maybe someone up there is trying to protect me from myself.....but hell, I'm mad about this and I'm going to try and rewrite it as best I can.

Usually the White House releases stories like THIS on late Friday afternoon so it will fly under most news rooms radar. That it was released today was either an error, or it means that the pResident doesn't really think it will be too controversial.

Well, I may come off sounding to some like a homophobic bigot by stating my opinion on this, but I really don't give a damn.

In the words of GuyK: "Good God Gerty, What A Gash!"

WHY does our Dear Leader feel that we need such a month to celebrate GLBT Pride? HOW does he feel that this will suddenly enamour the general population to this vocal minority of our population? WHERE will this play out unnoticed or commented upon by vociferous parties from both sides of the issue? (NOT HERE, certainly!) I truly believe that PC/Identity Politics are a major cause of some of the problems our society faces today.

This Republic was founded on the notion of the INDIVIDUAL and his liberty as the main focus...today the focus has changed to be on amorphous group identities and their "rights" as a group, and mainly, on their "right" not to be offended by another individual or group.

I have a brother who belongs to this vocal minority segment. He doesn't need such a proclamation to be made to feel special.
He's special just by virtue of being an honest, law-abiding citizen, and that is all ANY of us should expect. We have disagreements about his lifestyle all the time, but in the end, it comes down to one thing; the expectation to be treated as we deserve to be treated by virtue of our own humanity, coupled to our own actions.

Everyone deserves to be treated fairly under the law, but you can't behave in ways outside the societal norm and not expect any consequences.
Government has no business trying to engineer public opinions, or render special privileges to vocal minorities. Equal Protection under the law should be the only standard. Other than that, it's not governments business (and certainly not my business) to dictate attitudes towards any other member of this society.

My brother once complained to me that "it's not fair that I can't express public affection to my lover without being looked at differently by the strangers around me"...In a sense, he's correct, it isn't "fair", and he certainly has the right to engage in those activities (as long as they remain in legal bounds)...but all I can say is that if you wish to act out of the norm, expect that many people will not treat you in the norm. If I act like a crazy clown, I would expect to be treated as such.
We all have been treated unfairly at some time of our lives, deal with it and get over it.

On a related side topic -- "Gay Marriage" is an oxymoron. Marriage is a religious concept, and most of the major religions don't sanction homosexual relationships.

Civil Unions are the equivalent State concept of marriage. Today, all "married" couples are really Civil Unions first and foremost in the eyes of the law. It's the individuals involved religious ideas that determine if their union is also a marriage as well.

I believe it should be up to the individual States to decide what they will condone in this area. And YES I do have a right to have a say in this area if it comes up in referendum. Civil Unions convey rights and privileges to the couple that may affect the public coffers (IE costs in enforcing divorce decrees on support/alimony, social security/medicare benefits, inheritance, etc, etc) if it can cost the public in any way, they public has a say in it, Period.

Hmmmm I'm a Taurean-Caucasian-Dutch Emigre-Naturalized Citizen....WHERE is MY Month? Guess none of those groups are vocal enough to warrant one....DAMMIT I just spent forty-five minutes on a good rant and had my computer crash just as I was posting it...maybe someone up there is trying to protect me from myself.....but hell, I'm mad about this and I'm going to try and rewrite it as best I can.
