Quote of the Day

"To the distinguished Character of Patriot, it should be our highest Glory to add the more distinguished Character of Christian. The signal Instances of providential Goodness which we have experienced and which have now almost crowned our labours with complete Success, demand from us in a peculiar manner the warmest returns of Gratitude and Piety to the Supreme Author of all Good." --George Washington

So much for the Founders not wanting religion mixed with public activities. ALL of the Founders were men of faith of one manner or another; the glue binding them together was their belief in a Supreme Being, and that that Being granted every human being certain rights just by virtue of their existing as human beings.

Those rights were held to be sacred and not in the purview of any government to take away or alter.

Contrast that view with the current Progressive view that rights are to be delivered/enforced by Government fiat and you will see how far afield we as a Nation have strayed.

For those Progressives that would point to Thomas Jefferson as their standard bearer of making government totally secular I would point out the following quote of Jefferson's (emps mine):

"The God who gave us life, gave us liberty at the same time. ... Can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are the gift of God? That they are not to be violated but with his wrath? Indeed I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just: that his justice cannot sleep for ever."

Jefferson also wrote:

"I am a Christian in the only sense in which He wished anyone to be: sincerely attached to His doctrines in preference to all others. ... I am a real Christian -- that is to say, a disciple of the doctrines of Jesus Christ."

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it'll do even better in those areas, but for now it's a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod's strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like 'Mixview' that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you're listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of "neighbors" will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune "Social" is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.

I am always sating hotels and the difference in quality and customer service still amazes me. I have done a lot of travelling through business and pleasure and the difference to me between a nice stay and a great stay is welcoming staff. There is nothing worse than checking into a hotel to find that the staff can't even really be bothered to servce you and show you too your room. I have also stayed at hotels where items of my personal belongings have gone missing after the maids have gone through the place.

Presidential Inauguration: Sonia Sotomayor Swears in Vice President Joseph Biden
Washington D.C. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor swore in Vice President Joseph Biden Monday at the presidential inauguration, becoming the first Hispanic to administer an oath of office in U.S. history.

Sotomayor, the first Latina to serve on the high court, also became the fourth female judge in U.S. history to administer an oath of office.

Biden personally selected Sotomayor to swear him in.

“From the first time I met her, I was impressed by Justice Sotomayor’s commitment to justice and opportunity for all Americans, and she continues to exemplify those values today," Biden said after choosing her. "Above all, I’m happy for the chance to be sworn in by a friend – and someone I know will continue to do great things.”

It was one of the greatest pleasures of my career to be involved in [Sonia Sotomayor's] selection to the Court.- Vic sac louis vuitton e President Joseph Biden

The promi sac louis vuitton nent role of a Latina at the inauguration is a nod, to some degree, to the critical role Hispanics played in the Nov. 6 elections th louis vuitton handbags at gave President Barack Obama a victory. Latinos turned out in record numbers, accounting for 10 percent of voters; 71 percent voted for Obama over his GOP challenger, Mitt Romney.

Latinos also made history in Congressional races. The 113th Congress included more Latinos than ever, with three in the U.S. Senate and 28 in the House of Representatives.

Obama nominated Sotomayor to the Supreme Court in 2009. It was a remarkable moment for a woman who was born in the South Bronx to Juan and Celina Sotomayor, both of Puerto Rican descent. Sotomayor’s mother was a methadone clinic nurse, and her father was a tool worker who died when Sotomayor was just 9 years old.

Sotomayor has said that her mother doggedly pushed her two children to get a college education. Sotomayor began dreaming of becoming a judge after watching the TV show “Perry Mason,” in which the main character was a defense attorney.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in 1976 from Princeton University, graduating summa cum laude and receiving the Pyne Prize, the university's highest academic honor. In 1979, she earned a degree from Yale Law School, where she served as an editor of the Yale Law Journal.

In 1991, President George H.W. Bush nominated her to the U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York, and she served in that role from 1992–1998. She served as a judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit from 1998–2009.

Anchorage OK, Wednesday was clearly not just another night at the rink in the grind that is the ECHL s 72-game regular season. Not with the Alaska Aces posting a come-from-way-behind 4-3 shootout victory over the Ontario Reign at Sullivan Arena. Not with Jarred Smith s game-winning shootout goal striking the crossbar, then ricocheting off the leg of Reign goaltender Dustin Carlson and just across the goal line all of which prompted referee Joe Sullivan to begin to signal no goal, only then to switch gears and signal goal, and end of game. Not with Carlson, who two days ago was holding down three jobs in Columbus, Ohio, playing terrifically in his first game in more than nine months. Not with these top two teams in the Western Conference the Aces (29-8-1) lead the entire 23-team league and the Reign are excellent (24-9-3) playing extra time for the third time in their four meetings and producing a fourth straight one-goal game. Not with the Aces stretching their string of games unbeaten in regulation to 12 (11-0-1), the fifth-longest such streak in their 10 ECHL seasons, and winning their seventh straight home game. Not with Aces captain Steve Ward returning after missing 33 games with a broken right leg that required surgery he suffered that injury blocking a shot on Oct. 26.And certainly not with the Aces possibly losing their second-leading active scorer, winger Garry Nunn, with an injury to his left foot that left him in a walking boot and using a crutch to get around afterward. The five-round shootout was extended to a sixth round with the teams tied 3-3. After Ontario s Chris Huxley failed to score to start the sixth round, the rookie Smith skated in on Carlson and fired a wrist shot that struck iron and then ricocheted back into Carlson before crossing the goal line to give the Aces a decisive 4-3 edge in the skills competition.A shootout attempt is like a penalty shot and here s what Rule 24.2 in the ECHL Official Rules says about penalty shots: No goal can be scored on a rebound of any kind (an exception being the puck off the goal post or crossbar, then the goalkeeper and then directly into the goal.).Smith said he was momentarily bummed when it initially appeared the shootout would be extended to seven rounds between two teams that went to a nine-round shootout before Ontario won in California on Saturday. As I was curling (away), I was like, C mon, I beat him clean, Smith said. Then he backed into it, and it went in. Carlson, who made 23 saves in regulation and OT after not playing in a game since March 31, was thrilled to be back working in the game he cherishes. The former Ohio State goalie was living and training in Columbus and working three jobs valet parking, working for a doggie day care business and coaching youth goalies when Ontario summoned him. The Reign needed goalies because their two, Jean-Francois Berube and Chris Carrozzi, were summoned to the American Hockey League once the NHL lockout ended.Carlson, who split last season between Ontario and Toledo, flew Tuesday from Columbus to Chicago to Seattle, where he met up with the Reign and accompanied them to Anchorage. Wednesday s morning skate was his only practice with the club. No. 1, I was so excited to play this game again I love it to death, Carlson said. My mind-set was, You have to be good because it might be your last chance. Things were looking up for Carlson and company midway through the game. C.J. Stretch s first-period goal and second-period strikes by Brady Calla and Kyle Kraemer forged a 3-0 lead on the Aces and goalie Gerald Coleman (29 saves). But the Aces rallied. Alexandre Imbeault scored 24 seconds after Kraemer s goal, roofing a wrister off Bobby Hughes 2-on-1 pass. We managed to stop that (Ontario) momentum cold, said Aces leading scorer Nick Mazzolini.Just 2:13 later, fill-in center Merit Waldrop of Anchorage bagged his first pro goal since March 2010 when he drove the net on a power-play rush. Hughes shot was stopped by Carlson, but the rebound glanced off Waldrop s skate and in a split-second before he crashed into the net and knocked it off its moorings. In the final minute of the period, Hughes stripped Colton Yellow Horn of the puck at the Ontario line and beat Carlson with a long wrister between the goalie s right arm and body to rack a 3-3 tie.Hughes, whose one goal and two helpers marked his first three-point game as an Ace, said Imbeault s goal triggered the comeback. It seems like when you get a quick goal, the bounces just seem to go your way, Hughes s louis vuitton portefeuile aid.Smith said the comeback after the Aces mustered just four first-period shots, stemmed from patience and improved execution. It was a really good win, consid http://www.saclouisvuittono.com ering how poorly we started, he said. When you get down like that, you just have to think, One at a time, and take it shift by shift. The Aces lost Nunn late in the second period, just prior to Hughes game-tying goal. Nunn was struck by friendly fire defenseman Sean Curry, who owns a blistering shot, fired a slapper that hit Nunn on the inside of his left foot and felled the winger. Twice, Nunn hobbled upright only to crumple to the ice.Nunn said X-rays after the game were inconclusive and he will have another exam Thursday to determine the extent of his injury. It doesn t feel great, Nunn said. It hit me square on, a heavy shot. As the 5-foot-9 Nunn spoke outside the Aces dressing room, the 6-foot-5 Curry approached and hugged his teammate. Don t worry about it, Nunn told Curry. I m sure you weren t aiming for me. Shuffling the deckAfter converting 10 of 51 shootout attempts (19.6 percent) last season, the Aces are 14 of 24 (58.3 percent) this season. They are 3-1 in shootouts.Mazzolini is 3 for 3 in the shootout, tying him with departed NHLer Joey Crabb for the best mark among Aces.Ontario rookie Mario Lamoureux, the younger brother of former Aces goaltender Jean-Philippe Lamoureux and former Aces winger Jacques Lamoureux, scored in the shootout to make him 4 of 5 this season. Jacques Lamoureux, stationed here in the Air Force, dressed for the short-handed Reign, who used Anchorage s Drew O Connell as their emergency backup goaltender.Stretch s first-period goal marked the first time in 683:01 the equivalent of more than 11 regulation games and a period that the Aces have trailed.Waldrop s power-play goal was Alaska s first in the last four games.Alaska and Ontario, which played two games in California last weekend, play Friday and Saturday nights at Sullivan to make it five straight games between the teams.Find Doyle Woody s blog at adn.com/hockeyblog or call him at 257-4335.Aces win shootout 4-3Ontario 1 2 0 0 3Aces 0 3 0 1 4First Period 1, Ontario, Stretch 19 (Brodie Sheahan), 18:45. NEW YORK - The 787 Dreamliner was born in a moment of desperation. It was 2003 and Boeing the company that defined modern air travel had just lost its title as the world's largest plane manufacturer to European rival Airbus. Its CEO had resigned in a defense-contract scandal. And its stock had plunged to the lowest price in a decade. Two years after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, financially troubled airlines were reluctant to buy new planes. Boeing needed something revolutionary to win back customers. Salvation had a code name: Yellowstone. It was a plane that promised to be lighter and more technologically advanced than any other. Half of it louis vuitton bags would be built with new plastics instead of aluminum. The cabin would be more comfortable for passengers, and airlines could cut their fuel bills by 20 percent. But once production started, the gap between vision and reality quickly widened. The jet that was eventually dubbed the Dreamliner became plagued with manufacturing delays, cost overruns and sinking worker morale. In interviews with The Associated Press, a dozen former Boeing engineers, designers and managers recounted the pressure to meet tight deadlines. Adding to the chaos was the company's never-before-tried plan to build a plane from parts made around the globe. The former Boeing workers still stand behind the jetliner and louis vuitton portefeuile are proud to have worked on it. But many question whether the rush contributed to a series of problems that led the Federal Aviation Administration last week to take the extraordinary step of grounding the 787. Other countries did the same. Even before a single bolt was tightened, the Dreamliner was different. Because executives didn't want to risk all of the billions of dollars necessary to build a new commercial aircraft, they came up with a novel, but precarious, solution. A global network of suppliers would develop, and then build, most of the parts in locations as far away as Germany, Japan and Sweden. Boeing's own employees would manufacture just 35 percent of the plane before assembling the final aircraft at its plant outside Seattle. The decision haunts Boeing to this day. The FAA's order to stop flying the Dreamliner came after a battery fire aboard a 787 in Boston and another battery incident during a flight in Japan. It was the first time the FAA had grounded a whole fleet of planes since 1979, when it ordered the DC-10 out of the sky following a series of fatal crashes. Inspectors have focused on the plane's lithium-ion batteries and its complicated electrical system, which were developed by subcontractors in Japan, France, Arizona and North Carolina. Boeing declined to comment about the past but said its engineers are working around the clock to fix the recent problems. Until those investigations conclude, we can't speculate on what the results may be, the company said in a statement. We are confident the 787 is safe, and we stand behind its overall integrity. For decades, Boeing has been responsible for the biggest advances in aviation. sac louis vuitton The jet age started in 1958 with a Pan American flight between New York and Paris that took just eight and a half hours aboard the new Boeing 707. In 1970, Boeing ushered in the era of the jumbo jet with the 747. The giant plane, with its distinctive bulbous upper deck, made global air travel affordable. Suddenly a summer vacation in London wasn't just for the rich. By the start of the 21st century, change was much more incremental. Consolidation had left the world with two main commercial jet manufacturers: Boeing and Airbus.

NEW YORK The head of a crew scrambling to gain control of a high-speed ferry before it crashed into a Manhattan pier reported having no time to warn hundreds of passengers, federal investigators said Friday. The preliminary factual account by the National Transportation Safety Board recounted the hectic moments aboard the vessel bef louis vuitton bags ore it crashed last month, injuring 85 people, one person seriously.According to the report, the Seastreak Wall Street ferry left Atlantic Highlands, N.J., at 8:02 a.m. on Jan. 9 with 326 passengers aboard for its second trip of the day. The boat's master, one of five crew members, reduced the speed of the 131-foot-long vessel as it approached Pier 11 in Manhattan from 30 knots to 12 knots, the speed it was going when it hit crashed. The NTSB s http://www.saclouisvuittono.com aid the problem arose when he attempted to gain better visibility of the dock and his crew handling docking duties by transferring propulsion control of the boat from a central console to one on the starboard, or right, side of the vessel. The thrust controls there did not respond and he immediately returned to the central console, where they weren't working either, and then back to the starboard controls, where they still did not work, the transportation agency said.Afterwards, the starboard-side of the boat struck the dock, injuring one passenger seriously and causing minor injuries to 83 passengers and one crew member, the NTSB said. After the crash, passengers told reporters that they were not warned beforehan sac louis vuitton d that the crash was going to occur, a subject addressed by the NTSB report."The master told investigators that the event happened quickly and that he did not have time to issue a warning to the passengers over the onboard public address system or sound the danger signal," the NTSB said.Afterwards, the boat's two main engines stopped working and the master instructed a crew member to restart them, which he did successfully, the agency said. It added that propulsion control worked properly when the engines were restarted and the master was able to guide the boat to a slip, where emergency personnel were already waiting to tend to the injured. At least one passenger reported after the crash that a ferry employee had told her that the boat's captains had been complaining lately about the ferry's maneuverability.Built in 2003, the boat underwent modifications last February to its main engines and propulsion system. The NTSB said four main engines were replaced with two diesel engines operating at the time of the accident. It said water jets were replaced with controllable pitch propellers and new helm controls were installed in the wheelhouse. The ferry was restored to service after a Coast Guard inspection on July 24.The NTSB said the boat sustained damage to the starboard side of the bow and had debris in its portside propeller, along with a broken window on the bottom of a staircase and two windows on doors leading to the aft deck. The agency said it is aided in its probe by data from the boat's main engines and closed-circuit television, as well as from Vessel Traffic Service in New York. It said investigators conducted extensive testing of the ferry's propulsion system and interviewed crew members and passengers. Alcohol tests on crew members were negative and drug test results were being awaited. A week ago, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers completed an initial underwater survey of the approach to Pier 11, though the results were not yet known.
